Hope for the Holidays

From our friends at Hosparus in Elizabehtown:

It’s hard to believe the holiday season will soon be upon us. This time of year can be especially difficult for those coping with the loss of a loved one. The Hosparus Grief Counseling Center offers a series of support groups that provide a safe environment for grieving adults to share and be supported during their holiday grief experiences. The attached flyer is from Hosparus Central Kentucky group in Elizabethtown, but we offer them in our other service areas as well. Visit our calendar of events to find a group in your area: www.hosparus.org/events.html

Give A Day for Hunger

United Way of Central Kentucky is recruiting community volunteers to replenish Backpack Program bags for the Give a Day for Hunger event beginning on Tuesday, October 11th and ending on Saturday, October 15th at Feeding America’s Volunteer Center, located at 300 Peterson Drive in Elizabethtown.

This volunteer event is appropriate for even the kiddos– ages 5+ with parent supervision.

**In order to make sure we have enough space and work for everyone to do, businesses, schools, churches, and larger groups are encouraged to volunteer during the week while families and individuals are encouraged to volunteer on Saturday. However, please pick whichever date works best for you!

If you have questions or would like more information, contact Ashley Tiemann at 270.737.6608 or by emailing [email protected].

BBB Warns: Beware of Scams Surrounding Hurricane Matthew

BBB Warns: Beware of Scams Surrounding Hurricane Matthew

Scammers pretend to represent charitable efforts

Better Business Bureau (BBB) is warning those who want to help victims of Hurricane Matthew to be cautious when giving money or other assistance to charities. Fundraising efforts are already showing up on crowdfunding sites like Gofundme.com. While some efforts are legitimate, others are scammers posing as fake charities to take advantage of those who want to help.

“When a naturual disaster like this occurs, scam artists come out of the woodwork,” says Reanna Smith-Hamblin, President/CEO of the BBB serving Louisville, Southern Indiana and Western KY. “If you want to give, do your homework first, to be sure your donation is helping the right people.”

The best way to help is to donate money to a reputable humanitarian organization that has a long history of responding to local, national, and international disasters. The BBB offers the following tips to help you decide where to direct donations:

  • Be cautious of organizations with copy-cat names. They may be similar, but not exactly the same as the reputable charities.
  • Be cautious when giving online to unfamiliar charities. Many fake websites are set up after disasters, to “raise money.” All they are doing is stealing your personal information.
  • Be cautious of emails and social media. Spam messages and emails may claim to link to a relief organization, or have attachments in the emails that contain a virus. Posts on social media may claim to show “never seen before” pictures of the disaster area, taking you to a fake website where personal information may be stolen.
  • Find out if the charity is providing direct aid or raising money for other groups. You may want to avoid the middleman and give directly to charities that have a presence in the region. Check out the ultimate recipients of the donations to ensure that the organizations are equipped to effectively provide aid.
  • Be wary of claims that 100 percent of donations assist victims. All charities have fund-raising and administrative costs. Even a credit card donation will involve, at a minimum, a processing fee.
  • Rely on respected experts to evaluate a charity. Be cautious when relying on third-party recommendations such as bloggers, because they may not have fully researched the listed relief organizations. BBB provides a Wise Giving Guide to charities at www.bbb.org/charity. The guide shows which charities are accredited by the BBB and whether they meet the BBB’s 20 Standards for Charity Accountability.

Do NOT be pressured into making contributions, as reputable charities do NOT use such tactics.

Abraham Lincoln Birthplace to Host Night Sky Program

Abraham Lincoln Birthplace NHP will be hosting a Night Sky Program Friday, October 7, from 8:00 – 9:30 pm Eastern Time at the Knob Creek Boyhood Home Unit.

Dr. Mark Pitts and Dr. Marco Ciocca from the Department of Physics & Astronomy at Eastern Kentucky University will be conducting the evening activities. The program will begin with a short talk and explanation on the use of star charts to explore the night sky. Visitors will then have the opportunity to view celestial bodies through telescopes provided by EKU. A new moon will allow for dark skies and viewing of fainter objects such as nebulae, clusters, and the Milky Way.

Kids can take their stargazing experience to another level by creating their own universe out of Galaxy Dough and marbles (while supplies last).

Hot apple cider will be provided during the program.

The Knob Creek unit is located 7 miles northeast of Hodgenville, KY on US Highway 31E at 7120 Bardstown Road.

In the event of inclimate weather, the program will be rescheduled for Friday, October 14, from 8:00 – 9:30 pm Eastern Time.

Visitors must bring a flashlight, wear comfortable, appropriate clothing and sturdy walking shoes. Everyone is encouraged to arrive and park before 8:00 pm to “maintain dark skies” for good viewing.

The event is free and open to the public. For questions, call the park at 270-358-3137.
